3. Liepāja Museum

The former Katzenelson family mansion was built by the architect Max Paul Bertschy (1840–1911) after a drawing by the Berlin architect Ernest Eberhard von Ihne (1848–1917).

The founder and long-time head of the Liepāja Museum was the professor, artist and folk-art researcher Jānis Sudmalis (1887–1984). The Museum was founded in 1924, but the magnificent building located at Kūrmājas prospekts 16/18 was purchased by the City Council for the Museum later - in 1935.

Currently, the museum's collection contains more than 120 000 objects, and its halls and enfilades tell us the history of Liepāja and South Kurzeme from the Stone Age to the 19th century using the tangible language of objects, items and tools. Visitors can also see an exhibition dedicated to the life and work of the sculptor Miķelis Pankoks (1894–1983). The museum has several exhibition halls, where new art exhibitions are periodically open to public.
