Forests

A quarter of Liepaja city area is covered by forests that formed in various periods of time.

More than half of the groves is older than 60 years, 20% of forests are older than 140 years, and some pine groves are older than 200 years.

Despite the fact that Liepaja is popularly referred to as a city with blooming linden trees, most of the forest area (49%) consists of pines, 29% are covered in birch groves, while black alder dominates humid areas and takes up 19% of the total forest area.

Presence of nature in the city centre and neighbourhoods is ensured by parks and squares, however, the widest and most valuable forests are located in the northern part of the city – in Karosta, including the area around the picturesque Beberlini water reservoir.

The city applies effort to preserve the biologic diversity, which not only improves the view of the city, but also provides residents with recreation opportunities, for example, walks, sports activities, recreation with family and nature studies.
