Liepaja beach has been a popular destination for travellers since 19th century. It is a swimming area with unusually fine-grained white sand. Beach area is 50-80 meters wide and 8 kilometres long.
Every year Liepaja beach is awarded with the banner of excellent cleanliness – Blue flag.
Also, the beach is an important area for amber collection, since often smaller and larger pieces of amber are found here after storms. However, particular attention must be paid when gathering amber since white phosphorous can also be found on the beach. Pieces of white phosphorus resemble amber, while being slightly dimmer, but the most important thing is the fact that after drying the phosphorus rapidly ignites and can result in burns.
Liepaja is the first Latvian beach that has been adapted for use by people with disabilities and impaired eyesight. The beach is equipped with special audio buoys for people with impaired eyesight, swimming wheelchairs for people with disabilities, and a convenient boardwalk for easier access to the sea from the Life-guard station.
Also, Liepaja beach is a popular destination for kite-surfing and wind-surfing lovers.
To preserve coastal nature, living and recreational environment for people, the sea coast is a specially protected area, which is governed by Protection Zone law.
