A project submitted by South Kurzeme Municipality called “The Coastal Heritage of South Kurzeme Through the Centuries. Ālande River Recreation Complex” (Dienvidkurzemes piekrastes mantojums caurigadsimtiem. Ālandes upes atpūtas komplekss) has won the Latvian national selection for the Council of Europe Landscape Award.
The project will be in the running for a landscape title on the European scale.
Liepaja Municipality has received anhonourable mention for the project “Jānis Čakste Square Reconstruction and Improvement” (J. Čakstes laukuma rekonstrukcija un labiekārtošana).
“Ālande River Recreation Complex” was put into operation at the beginning of 2019. The walking trails constructed in the complex are almost three kilometres long and include“Grobiņa archaeological ensemble”, Ruins of Grobiņa Medieval Castle, Skābaržkalns, Grobiņa Old Town and Priediens cemetery.
The object received high recognition in the competition for the site’s identity discovery and historical memory preservation. Since “Grobiņa archaeological ensemble” is now a monument in the Latvian national tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage List, it can be further developed and expanded to highlight this cultural heritage.
